ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT


Short History of the Programme


The Department of Sociology, which started teaching in 1990-1991 academic year, gave its
first graduates in 1994. In the 1996-1997 academic year, a masters programme was opened
in the department, and as of the 2001-2002 academic year, English preparatory education
was introduced in the department. The first English preparatory students graduated at the
end of the 2005-2006 academic year. As of 2010, English preparatory programme was
cancelled. The language of instruction of the programme is completely Turkish.


Programme Qualifications


1. To have a basic and classical knowledge of Sociology and to be able to use this
understanding in the comparative and open perception of the contemporary world.
2. To be able to follow the currents and new knowledge in Sociology, both in Turkey and in
the world, to develop a critical relationship with them and to bring them to a level where
they can be discussed in every medium (written, verbal, through the media).
3. To direct students to studies that will increase their command of Turkish and at least one
foreign language and to improve their language skills in public and interpersonal
communication.
4. To enable students to express themselves through written texts, to put their thoughts into
written texts and to engage in critical dialogue with the texts of other writers.
5. To develop an awareness of sharing based on mutual respect, tolerance, understanding
and empathy between different social groups and global cultures.
6. To reach the level of a researcher who can design and write a research proposal on
his/her own with the knowledge and skills acquired at the undergraduate level, starting from
the observation phase of a social research. To gain practical field research experience by
participating in the ongoing research projects of the department in the context of Applied
Sociology.
7. To gain the necessary skills and knowledge to be a part of a team work, to ensure that
they can communicate in harmony with their colleagues in order to fulfil the tasks they
undertake as part of a team.
8. To be able to do archival research in libraries and archives through printed sources by
using the resources brought by the information society.
9. To be able to develop a vocabulary of knowledge to comprehend social relations,
historical developments, social factors and social problems both nationally and globally.

10. To provide knowledge on ethical issues related to sociological research processes and to
develop knowledge about social responsibility, which is both a professional and citizenship
requirement.
11. To be able to accumulate knowledge about basic texts in social sciences, philosophy,
psychology and world literature and to develop critical, comparative discussions and
arguments on these texts.
12. To acquire the skills to work as a Philosophy Group teacher at the secondary level and to
provide knowledge about the level and development of educational institutions on a
national and global scale.


Departmental Objectives


To provide a basic and classical knowledge of Sociology.
To transfer to the students by following the currents and new information in Sociology,
Philosophy in the world and to bring them to a level that can be discussed in every situation.
To direct students to studies that increase their command of both Turkish and foreign
languages.
To provide students with the opportunity to practise comfortable and instructive public
speaking in the context of the courses.
To teach field research techniques to complement the theoretical knowledge and to support
this teaching with Information Processing and Statistics courses.
To be able to take the student to the field research, to participate in the ongoing research
projects of the Department in the context of Applied Sociology.
To be able to carry out a social research starting from the observation phase to a full
researcher who can do and write a social research on his/her own.
To give the organisational knowledge to establish a business on their own.
To provide the basic and auxiliary course conditions for being a successful teacher in
secondary education.
To gain continuous reading interest and reading systematics.
To provide the student with the equipment to work in the public or private sector.
To be able to give the desire and accumulation of postgraduate education.


Outcomes of the Department


With its current programme, the department provides the knowledge and experience to
work in areas such as social research, social consultancy, human resources management,
advertising, media organisations in public or private enterprises.
Learning outcomes provide a professional stance with a good observer attitude and
empathy. It creates an individual profile that is sensitive to the problems of the environment
and the province as well as the country.
It gives an intellectual attitude that is open to change and innovations and has the ability to
criticise. It increases the tendency and desire to learn languages, to use Turkish correctly and
to read continuously.
A graduate of the department can become a Philosophy Group teacher when the necessary
official procedure is completed.

The student acquires the knowledge equipment to establish his/her own business in the
future and the knowledge to work in positions related to his/her field in public institutions
and organisations and private sector.
To gain the skills to work as a Philosophy Group teacher at the secondary education level

To orientate the students to studies that increase their command of Turkish and at least one
foreign language and to improve their language skills in public and interpersonal
communication.
